Home restaurants: the new trend in friendly dining

Whether you call it a home restaurant or “eating with locals”, this kind of dining where everyone can be a “chef” in his or her own home is becoming more and more popular.

Following in the steps of AriBnB, Blablacar… you can now find Internet platforms that connect hosts who cook and “guests” who are seeking an original gastronomic experience.

If you love to cook and welcome guests into your home (well, if you didn’t, you probably wouldn’t be doing this), you must first find a website you like and register. You will then have to put one or more meal proposals online and include the location (normally your home), the time of the meal, the number of guests, the menu and its price. So as to make your offer more personalised and attractive to potential guests, you will not only have to describe your tastes, the languages you speak, whether or not you accept smokers or children. Your guests will have paid, in advance, for their meal through the website, so you won’t have to deal with money or spoil the atmosphere of the evening by bringing it up.

The pictures you choose to put online to promote your delicious dishes and lovely dining room are key to making people want to come and share a meal with you. So be attentive to the visual aspects of your presentation.

What’s for dinner?

If you want an original meal, off the beaten track of restaurants either in your own city, in the countryside or abroad, go and visit different websites to find the meal that excites your taste buds and has an ambiance you like. The key word for these dinners is authenticity, both for the cooking and the hospitality. After all, your host will be sharing the food with you, and getting your live reactions. 

On the different websites, you’ll find proposals that range from afternoon tea, to a gastronomic feast with wine and champagne, to more exotic meals generally prepared by someone from that country. A gluten free dinner, an organic Japanese lunch, a cheese fondue, a night time picnic: you can choose from endless suggestions, each one more delicious and original than the last, for a price that is more often than not more affordable than that of a restaurant. 

Is it about making friends or making money?

The goal of a host isn’t usually to make a living, some barely recoup their costs, others make a small profit. Although there are some, who have a more “professional” approach, who try to make a living this way. 

For most hosts, it’s more about meeting guests and sharing food. They get to see people of all ages, from all over the world, turn up in their homes to discover their cooking and even their culture. 

And with a private chef? 

It’s also thanks to private chefs, like those of La Belle Assiette, that people have discovered the pleasure of hosting meals in their own home, like in a restaurant. In this instance, the host usually doesn’t charge his guests, as they are people he knows. He shares a really good meal with them, with the added bonus of the food being served by the chef who prepared it.
