What is the first sign of summer for you? Perhaps the long, mild evenings, the sound of birds singing in the trees, or the day when you finally put your winter coat away in the wardrobe and leave it there. For many, however, it is without a doubt the smell of a barbecue wafting through the air on a warm summer’s day.
Since the discovery of fire, mankind has been cooking meat, so it is impossible to attribute the discovery of the barbecue to one nation or culture. No one is really sure where the term barbecue originated from, either, although the most probable story is that the Spanish, upon landing in the Caribbean, used the word barbacoa to refer to the natives’ method of cooking meat slowly over a wooden platform. Nowadays, almost every nation has their own method of preparing grilled meat, and individuals are often fiercely proud of this, defiantly arguing that their country’s method is the best.
In 2013, a 28-year old man found himself craving a barbecued sausage so much that he decided to create his own makeshift BBQ in the living room of his sister’s house. To fuel the fire, he ripped three internal doors off their hinges and tore up multiple floorboards, as well as disabling the smoke alarms in the house so that the neighbours wouldn’t know what he was doing. After burning a large hole in the living room of the house, the man was arrested by police and served three years in jail.
While most of us have probably never gone to quite such extreme lengths to satisfy a BBQ craving, it is hard to deny that there is something rather magical about a barbecue. Be it huddling together under a gazebo in the pouring rain, or staying out drinking and eating late into the evening on the most beautiful of summer nights, a barbecue event really is the perfect opportunity to bring friends and family together in a wonderfully relaxed and informal environment, and to ignite a sense that summer has finally begun.
This year, why not make your event a truly spectacular affair, by leaving the hard work to one of our private chefs? Perhaps you fancy spicing things up a bit with a Middle Eastern style BBQ, or would instead rather opt for something more traditional and British. For a more stylish affair, our Ultimate Spread menu is the perfect choice, allowing you to fuse exquisite food with the perfect convivial experience of a classic British BBQ. And if you fancy a little more variety this summer, why not try our Exotic Grill menu, fusing Italian, Thai, American, African and Middle Eastern flavours for a truly unique BBQ twist.
With Summer just around the corner, it is the perfect time to begin planning a BBQ event with a difference. And don’t worry – I’m thinking less hole-burnt-in-the-living-room-
